Everything about designing a bedroom layout

A bedroom is more than just a space for sleeping; it is a sanctuary for rest, relaxation, and personal reflection. It's a place to unwind after a long day, read a good book, or snuggle up with a loved one.

To create a functional bedroom, you'll need to consider a range of factors, from the size and placement of key furniture elements like the bed, nightstands, and wardrobe, to the overall flow and composition of the room.

Bed Dimensions

Keep in mind the following are mattress sizes, not including the bed frame:
  • Crib: 120x80 cm
  • Toddler Bed: 70 cm x 140 cm
  • Twin single: 99x191 cm
  • Twin XL: 99x203 cm
  • Full Double: 137x191 cm
  • Queen: 152x203 cm
  • King: 193x203 cm
  • California King: 183x213 cm

Night Stand Dimensions

The dimensions of a typical nightstand are around 50-60 cm wide, 40-50 cm deep, and 60-70 cm tall. Some nightstands have built-in drawers to allow for more storage space.

Closet Dimensions

Closets exist in a wide range of sizes or are custom-made casework. The average closet size is 60 - 70 cm wide and about 120 to 220 cm long, depending on the space it is in.
A sliding door closet requires a minimum 75 cm clearance. An open-door closet clearance is 75 cm + the dimension of its door length to be opened comfortably.
3 Walk-In Closet Typologies are:
  • One side walk-in closet - Minimal size 1.50x1.50 cm
  • L Shaped walk-in closet - Minimal size 1.85x1.85 cm
  • U Shaped walk-in closet - Minimal size 2.15x2.15 cm

TV Unit Dimensions

A bedroom TV unit facilitates the TV and provides extra storage for clothes and personal items. A TV unit size should correlate with the standing TV size;
  • For a TV between 32”-42”, allow a ~90x40 cm unit.
  • For a TV between 43”-55”, allow a ~1.115x45 cm unit.
  • For a TV between 56”-67”, allow a ~1.60x50 cm unit
A wall-mounted TV does not require a TV unit and is more space efficient. Yet, a TV unit is still used for storage and aesthetics. In this case, the dimensions above apply with a minimum width of 40 cm for all cases.

Desk & Chair Dimensions

Some bedrooms incorporate a desk and chair; these may be small student bedrooms or large master bedrooms.
The Standard desk size is between 60x120 cm to 80x160 cm, and the average chair size is around 60x65 cm.

Bedroom Door - Bed Ratio

When locating a bed in a room, it's important to position it according to the entrance door. The following rules of thumb will allow a sense of security and privacy in a bedroom:
  • Place the bed diagonally to the entrance door.
  • Avoid placing a bed directly in front of a door.
  • Don’t place the bed headboard near the door.
  • Preferably, locate the bed so that there is an eye site between it to the entrance door.

Bedroom Window - Bed Ratio

Windows can be roughly divided into two types; windows with hinges and windows with railing. The first requires clearance for opening/closing of their sashes. The second doesn’t, as it is flushed with the wall.
Avoid placing a bed under a window due to the following:
  • Uncomfortable access to the window.
  • The headboard may block the outdoor view.
  • Less privacy and exposure to outdoor noises, light, and temperature.
  • Notice - sometimes placing a bed under a window is inevitable and can, in fact, be esthetically pleasing.

Circulation & Clearance

Circulation paths should be a minimum of 75 cm and may overlap with the clearance needed for furniture.
Sliding door closet clearance should be a minimum of 75 cm, yet when it comes to an open-door closet or a TV unit with drawers, the clearance should be 75 cm plus the closet door length or drawer depth, to allow comfortable access.
The clearance in front of a desk for a chair to be accessible is a minimum of 75 cm. This area may overlap with the circulation path in compact bedrooms.

Distance Between Bed To TV

The recommended distance between a bed to a TV can be achieved by multiplying the TV screen size (diagonal between cross corners of the screen) by 1.2.
Here is a Bed-TV Viewing Distance Chart for example:
  • 50” TV: 1.5 m from bed
  • 55” TV: 1.66 m from bed
  • 65” TV: 1.8 m from bed
  • 70” TV: 2.13 m from bed
  • 75” TV: 2.31 m from bed
  • 85” TV: 2.58 m from bed

Infant / Child Bedroom

An infant's bedroom should be highly functional yet warm and intimate.
It is recemented to allow for double the minimal clearance size in front of a crib than you would in front of a bed: which is 1.50x1.50 cm.
Another thing to consider while designing the layout of an infant is that, with time, it will transform into a child's bedroom by replacing the crib with a child's bed and the changing table with a closet.

Teenage / Student Bedroom

A teenage or student bedroom is often a relatively small space that should contain a single or double bed, a closet, and a desk with a comfortable chair for studies. To optimize the limited space, it's crucial to use the bare minimum-sized objects and furniture pieces.
By taking a minimalist approach, you can create a functional and comfortable space!

Couple Bedroom

The basics of a couple bedroom would be a double bed, nightstands, and a closet.
This typology of bedroom withholds endless layout arrangements and depends deeply on the room size and shape.
Fun fact: It's recommended to enable space from both sides of a double bed, not only for comfortable access from each side: but also for better balance and relationship prospects, according to Feng Shui.

Master Bedroom

Designing a master bedroom offers the opportunity to create a luxurious retreat.
Separate the room into areas for sleeping, dressing, working, and relaxing to create intimacy and a variety of use cases within the room.
With a thoughtful approach, a master bedroom can provide an oasis of comfort and functionality.
